Reclaimed Historical Wood Bench -Coffee Table with salvaged old growth lumber wood slab top with 1/2" rod Steel Clear coated Hairpin Legs.

This amazing piece of HEAVY old growth fir lumber was salvaged from the Columbia Hotel at 65 main St., Leominster Massachusetts. A 6 alarm fire destroyed this historic building, built in 1892, on November 24th, 2012. This board is amazing, with a rich brown orange color, and wide growth rings.

The board has natural checks throughout---to we have structurally contained and strengthened the board with (3) 3/8" threaded rods through the board, with nuts and washers that have been inset into the board maintaining a smooth surface.

Handcrafted in Massachusetts, Solid Black Walnut Slab with brushed steel hairpin legs.

This board has a numerous instances of curling which gives the surface an iridescent wavy look, and a unique grain pattern showcasing the heartwood and sapwood lines of the wood; juxtaposing the distinctive dark brown of black walnut heartwood with the lighter whitish sapwood. Both sides are cut through the heartwood and sapwood, with numerous instances of birdseye figure--which resemble small swirling eyes---and the curl figure seems to wrap around the eye figures. The bark has been left intact and honed for an amazing unique grain look with psychedelic instances of color and grain pattern. This gorgeous, solid wood serving / cutting board has been hand crafted from locally salvaged black walnut from Central Massachusetts.

Makes a warm and unique addition to any living room. The perfect blend of simplicity with modern and rustic.

Finish

Entire table varnished with our own blend of beeswax & oil…creating a beautiful natural matte finish. This traditional, hand-rubbed finish results in a slightly glossy finish that is buttery smooth to the touch and water resistant while showcasing the natural color and character of the wood; helping to condition the wood and provide resistance to moisture.

The wax finish results in a gorgeous, rich luster, and with the proper care this table can continue to maintain its natural beauty for many years. It is important to note that this finish is less resistant to staining (water rings) than polyurethane based finishes and requires that you re-apply a beeswax blend wax (or other natural wood conditioning paste) periodically to maintain the natural, moisture resistant, soft slightly glossy/matte finish of the wood. We recommend you protect the wood surface from standing water i.e.) vigilant use of coasters.

A satin polyurethane finish (for better protection) can also be applied if desired.

Dimensions

Top: Solid Black Walnut: 40.5" long X 17" at the widest width X 1.25" thick x 17 1/4" high Legs: 3/8" solid round steel welded to 4"x1/8" thick bases. Each leg is completely wire brushed to a chrome like finish then clearcoated to prevent rust.

Wood Species Information

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a very durable and dense hardwood with a Janka rating of 1010, similar in hardness to Teak. Black Walnut heartwood is rich dark brown to purplish-black and is usually straight grained. Wavy or curly grain is sometimes present. Texture is coarse. other names commonly associated with Black Walnut are American Walnut, Virginia Walnut, Canaletto, and Black Hickory Nut.

You have many choices available for finishing;

• satin polyurethane rubbed with steel wool: a water resistant coating that results in a matte finish that is resistant to stains and resistant to finger prints
• semi-gloss polyurethane: a thicker coating that results in a semi-gloss finish that is resistant to stains and resistant to finger prints
• high-gloss polyurethane: a thicker coating that results in a high-gloss (shiny, glossy) finish that is resistant to stains. Tends to show fingerprints more often so may require wiping down more often than a semi-gloss.
• hand-rubbed natural oil & wax finishes: a linseed oil or mineral oil + beeswax finish results in a gorgeous natural, soft to the touch, matte finish that showcases the natural character of the wood. Less resistant to staining than a polyurethane and requires that you re-apply a wax+oil blend or other natural oil periodically to maintain the natural, moisture resistant, soft matte finish of the wood.
